the remarkable story of a bizarre deception plot by british intelligence. the author was responsible for devising a plan to make the germans believe that the allies would not invade sicily, the obvious target, but go to sardinia and greece instead. they used a dead body, created a false identity and cover story to make him 'real'. they placed 'secret' papers addressed to eisenhower on him and the body was launched from a submarine washing up in spain in an area with active german agents. the papers were examined by the germans before returned to the british. they were believed and acted upon. written before 'ultra' was revealed, confirmation that their plan had succeeded is given a cover story of its own. photos. hardbound with d/j. very minor chips to d/j. excellent condition.

One of the finest examinations of the dynamics between politicians and military leaders in a world war. The author uses the diaries of Field Marshal Viscount Alanbrooke, a most able soldier, who was instrumental in describing how he guided British military strategy as CIGS and keeping Churchill from his wild schemes and demands. Alanbrooke was under incredible pressure, but was able to appear calm and remained as Churchill's best advisor. Photos and maps. Hardbound with d/j. D/j has some chips and a small loss on the rear.
