The story of the victory achieved by the RAF at Habbaniya in Iraq. Fought against heavy odds it is all but forgotten, but was a pivotal moment in the Middle East. A pro-Axis government sent thousands of its army troops and modern airforce supported by German aircraft to surround and capture the RAF training base. Improvising using mostly obsolete trainers that were hastily armed, the instructors and trainee pilots instead attacked the Iraqi forces. There were heavy losses but they held out for 5 days until the demoralized Iraqi’s retreated. A relief column arrived some time later. Photos. Hardbound with d/j. Near mint condition.
