1414        canadian volunteers: spain  1936-1939                                                                      20.00
beeching, william.,  1st.  ed. 1989,  Hignall printing, 212 pp.
                isbn 0-88977-057-3
this book is written by a former member of the 'mackenzie-papineau battalion' of canadian volunteers who fought on the republican side in the civil war.  the author's communist political leanings are present throughout.  claims made in the forward that these volunteers were 'far sighted heroes who had seen the danger which fascism posed to world peace' is a fanciful conclusion at best.  nevertheless, he describes the journeys to get to spain, the battles and struggles of the roughly 1400 canadians who fought and the 700 who died.  He draws from original documents, journals and the memories of those involved and details the relatively unknown record of canadian participation in the civil war.   photos.  hardbound with d/j.  near mint condition.

                Trythall, J.W.D., 1st. ed. 1970. McGraw Hill, 304 pp.
A full biography of Francisco Franco towards the end of his rule.  Starting out as a competent yet unremarkable cadet, he rose to lead the Nationalist forces in the Spanish Civil War leading them to victory.  After the civil war, He managed to avoid joining the Axis to remain neutral in WW2 despite considerable pressure from hitler to attack gibraltar and enter into the war. Hitler came to despise him, but his political skills saved Spain from further disaster.  Photos and illustrations.  Hardbound with d/j.  D/j has some scuffs and a small tear. Very good condition.

584         guernica - crucible of war                                                                                                      15.00
Thomas, Gordon & Max Morgan Witts, 1st. ed. 1975, Stein and Day, 319 pp.
                ISBN 0-8128-1839-3
The bombing of Guernica became and remains the symbol of the horror of aerial bombardment of civilians. The Germans were supporting Franco and also testing new ideas of aerial warfare in the process.  All sides of the conflict used the bombing to support their own propaganda and so distort the truth of what actually happened.  This book tries to cover the full story.  Photos.  Hardbound with d/j.  Some minor chips on d/j. otherwise in excellent condition.
